Kidney Failure Urine Smell – Bad Breath, and Smelly Ears May Be a Serious Medical Condition For Your Dog   by Kidney Expert

Kidney Failure Urine Smell

So, do you happen to live with a canine stricken with halitosis? If you do, you know that this is so not fun. All too often, when a senior dog yawns, his people wish they could give him a very strong breath mint. Yet despite the well-known term “dog-breath”, you can help out your foul smelling mouthed mutt or pure-bred with his or her bad smelling breath. The people around him do not need to suffer in silence, and the pooch need not suffer, either.

Bad breath could mean that your dog is suffering. It could also be a sign of something more serious. Check your canines gums, are they red and or does he have yellow teeth? Odds are, he probably has periodontal disease. This all-too-common canine problem, particularly in senior dogs, results when bacteria, also called plaque, deposits build up on the teeth in hours after eating. In only a few days, the plaque hardens. The gum begins to separate from the teeth and most likely result in tooth loss. Meanwhile, your dog’s teeth and gums may well hurt so much that it is hard for your pet to eat.

Tooth loss is not always the only result of canine periodontal disease. This disease is an infection, and this infection may be very serious, it can spread to other parts of the body, including the dog’s vital organs, that include the heart and lungs. Infections in any of these organs are especially serious and can prove to be fatal.

There are other conditions that may cause your canine to have smelly breath as well. This includes simply eating foul smelling foods or it could be caused by something more serious such as diabetes or kidney disease, if your dog has an ammonia-like or a urine-like smell to his or her breath, this could indicate a very serious kidney disease that demands treatment immediately. Other causes might include sinus problems and autoimmune diseases. That is why it is best to have a veterinarian take a look at your dog to make the appropriate diagnosis so accurate treatment can begin. Kidney Failure Urine Smell

Another warning sign as far as dog hygiene goes, is smelly ears, canines with highly fragrant ears probably are pretty uncomfortable. Odds are they have an ear infection, and can certainly be very painful. If an ear infection is left untreated, the infection could cause your dog to lose his or her hearing.

The most common type of ear odor smells similar to baking bread. This odor is a direct result of a yeast infection. Other symptoms include frequent head shaking and a brown, goopy discharge originating from the ears.

Something to keep in mind is that an ear infection may be a sign of an underlying problem, such as allergies, hypothyroidism, disorders of the immune system, or tumors. A veterinarian will need to examine your dog to establish the root of the problem as well as the organism that is triggering the infection. You then have a fair chance of eliminating the infection with treatment.

If your dog’s unpleasant aroma does not originate from the mouth or ears, he might still have a problem. Canine body odor isn’t necessarily normal. If you know that your senior pooch has not rolled in something stinky and disgusting, his embarrassing aroma may reveal one of various conditions you ought to be aware of.

A frequent cause of canine odor is a condition known as seborrhea, this condition can cause hair loss, flaking and greasy skin. Certain metabolic diseases may also cause your four-legged friend to smell foul. If a foul smelling odor occurs from a wound, suspect infection. Body odor is also symptomatic of cancer.

In any case, a pooch with body odor should be examined by a veterinarian, not just for his / her well-being, but also for his people that have to live with him. Kidney Failure Urine Smell

The Heart of Long-Term Care

The Heart of Long-Term Care

$54.08

Long-term care in the United States has taken the nursing home as its benchmark, but the monetary, social, and psychological costs of nursing home care are all too high. This book challenges the current dominance of nursing homes as the principal institution of long-term care. It offers a series of alternative models where both services and housing can be provided in a way that allows long-term consumers to enjoy dignified, "normal" lifestyles. It addresses the political and economic consequences of making this decision. The authors start with the premise that long-term care is designed to assist people who lack the capacity to function fully independently. They argue that no disabled person of any age should be required to forsake his/her humanity in exchange for care. The book rejects the artificial dichotomy between social and medical care, asserting that both play important roles in psychological and physical well-being of long-term care patients. The authors consider the need for competent and compassionate medicine and discuss the methods for improving both its coordination of care and its effectiveness. The book redefines the meaning of safety and protection in long-term care, and how this goal can be accomplished without sacrificing quality of living. As the new millennium and the aging of baby boomers approaches, more creative approaches to providing better long-term care are required. This volume outlines a useful framework for the provision of effective and humane community-based programs that are both feasible and affordable. It will be an invaluable guide for geriatricians, public health professionals, family physicians, nurses and others who care for elderly patients.

Quality of Life in Long-Term Care

Quality of Life in Long-Term Care

$3.46

Quality of Life in Long-Term Care provides long-term care professionals and persons responsible for training staff at long-term care facilities with guidelines for developing a quality of life that enables elderly persons, even those physically or mentally challenged, to achieve life satisfaction and to live with dignity. Readers learn of concepts and methods for implementing change through staff training, a supportive management style, the development of appropriate activities, and the ongoing evaluation of outcomes. While the focus of Quality of Life in Long-Term Care is on the psychosocial aspects of long-term care, Authors Dorothy Coons and Nancy Mace also recognize and emphasize the need for excellent medical care and a therapeutic physical environment. They give administrators very specific examples of ways to develop a quality of life that enables even the very impaired to live with dignity. In helping long-term care facility administrators and staff trainers, the authors show how to support staff development so the staff becomes friends and therapists, rather than simply caretakers. The training methods presented provide ways to help staff better understand and empathize with elderly residents. Readers will find that these effective staff training and management practices help to greatly reduce staff turnover.Chapters in Quality of Life in Long-Term Care describe facilities which provide individuality, opportunities for choice, social stimulation, and continuity of lifestyle for elderly people who live in retirement homes, nursing homes, or special dementia units. These examples are from facilities which have brought about change despite limitations including financial problems, structural restrictions, and staffing problems. Other topics covered which help long-term care facility administration and staff provide a superior quality of life for their residents include: criteria for creating a health fostering and therapeutic environment in long-term care settings management styles and methods that help staff achieve success specific training topics and methods to help staff understand the needs of the elderly activities and opportunities that can enrich long-term care environments an instrument designed to measure quality of lifeHealth care specialists; long-term care facility administrators; nurses; occupational, activity, and recreational therapists; designers and developers of special dementia units; policy planners in long-term care; and academicians in gerontology and long-term care will refer to Quality of Life in Long-Term Care repeatedly as they strive to provide residents with a good quality of life and a nurturing environment.

Leadership and Management Skills for Long-Term Care

Leadership and Management Skills for Long-Term Care

$58.99

While the scope of long-term care settings has expanded from nursing homes and home care agencies to assisted living facilities and community-based health services, the training for nurses, managers and administrators, medical directors, and other professionals who work in these facilities is often fragmented. This book was developed to fill a widely-recognized gap in the management and leadership skills of RNs needed to improve the quality of long-term care. The book is based around learning modules in leadership and management competencies that were site-tested in three types of long-term care settings and revised based on the resulting feedback. Several of the nurse experts involved in the project contribute to this book. The leadership modules cover team building, communication, power and negotiation, change theory and process, management direction and design, and management that moves from conflict to collaboration. Two additional modules cover cultural competence and principles of teaching and learning related to adult education in the long-term care environment. Together, these skills will enhance the nurse’s ability to build and interact with the geriatric care team, resolve conflict, negotiate for solutions, develop collaboration, and teach and mentor nurses and nursing assistants.

Coming to Term: Uncovering the Truth about Miscarriage

Coming to Term: Uncovering the Truth about Miscarriage

$19.13

After his wife lost four pregnancies, Jon Cohen set out to gather the most comprehensive and accurate information on miscarriage – a topic shrouded in myth, hype, and uncertainty. The result of his mission is a uniquely revealing and inspirational book for every woman who has lost at least one pregnancy – and for her partner, family, and close friends. Approaching the topic from a reporter’s perspective, Cohen takes us on a surprising journey into the laboratories and clinics of researchers at the front, weaving together their cutting-edge findings with intimate portraits of a dozen families who have had difficulty bringing a baby to term. Couples who seek medical help for miscarriage often encounter conflicting information about the causes of pregnancy loss and ways to prevent it. Cohen’s investigation synthesizes the latest scientific findings and unearths some surprising facts. We learn, for example, that nearly seven out of ten women who have had three or more miscarriages can still carry a child to term without medical intervention. Cohen also scrutinizes the full array of treatments, showing readers how to distinguish promising new options from the useless or even dangerous ones. Coming to Term is the first book to turn a journalistic spotlight on a subject that has remained largely in the shadows. With an unrelenting eye and the compassion that comes from personal experience, Jon Cohen offers a message that is both enlightening and surprisingly hopeful.

Basic Medical Terminology

Basic Medical Terminology

$34.45

Medical terminology is the professional language of those who are directly or indirectly engaged in the art of healing. You will need to know medical terms in order to read a medical record, to complete forms, to decipher a physician’s handwriting, and to communicate with others in the hospital in a professional manner. At first, the medical terms may seem strange and bewildering to you and appear to be extremely difficult to learn. Fortunately, there is a logical method found in medical terminology. Many of the words used in medicine are made up of parts which are also used in other words. Once you know the meanings of the basic parts of the words, you can put them together to understand the meanings of many medical terms. These basic parts of medical terms are called stems, prefixes, and suffixes. During this course, you will learn to identify and define a stem, a prefix, and a suffix. You will also learn how they are used in combination to describe a medical term.

EcoPure Healthy Gums & Teeth (60 ct)

$23.5

This item has been on DISCONTINUED. We recommend trying Ora-Clens Dental Rinse, Wipes and Chews –> EcoPure Healthy Gums & Teeth (60 ct) Most older pets are afflicted with some degree of tooth and gum disease. It’s estimated that 85 percent of canines over the age of two have some degree of periodontal disease. Unlike humans, pets normally do not get cavities due to their low sugar diet. However, oral disease (plaque, gingivitis and periodontal disease) is the most commonly diagnosed pet health problem, especially as they get older. As in humans, oral problems begin when bacteria (aerobic bacteria) combine with saliva and food particles, forming a sticky substance called plaque that forms between the teeth and gums. Plaque, which is invisible, is an ideal medium for the growth of bacteria. Ultimately, the bacteria irritate the gums, which become red, tender and swollen. This condition is known as gingivitis and is reversible through prompt treatment by a veterinarian. One of the first sign of oral disease is bad breath (halitosis). Although medical treatment for gingivitis and periodontal disease are improving, the best strategy is prevention. With proper diet, regular cleaning and regular supplementation with Healthy Gums & Teeth, such oral problems may be minimized, and your pet’s quality of life extended. EcoPure Healthy Gums & Teeth Supplements are for use with both cats and dogs. 60 Chewable Tablets per bottle. Made in the USA. Got Teeth? a Survivor's Guide: How to Keep Your Teeth or Live Without Them!

Got Teeth? a Survivor’s Guide: How to Keep Your Teeth or Live Without Them!

$19.19

Your heart beats quickly, your knuckles clench, and your palms sweat. First date? Job Interview? No. The receptionist just called your name and asked you to have a seat – in the DENTIST’S CHAIR Every sight, sound, and smell triggers haunting childhood memories. For those who have had unpleasant experiences in the dentist’s chair, the anticipation of each visit can be debilitating – and the reason why dental visits are put off until the point of no return. With over 75% of the population suffering from gum disease in varying stages, we are faced with difficult choices and sometimes – no choices: 1-1/2 million people each year get dentures. Periodontal disease can contribute to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, pre-term low-birth weight babies, stroke, and more. With notes and quotes from dental professionals, Section One may help you keep your teeth and improve your health. In Section Two, Saundra delivers a blunt and sometimes humorous (sure, she can laugh now ) account of her life-changing experience with periodontal disease, bone loss, and tooth loss. Her story sheds light on the stages of shock and devastation of realizing your teeth are leaving you, and learning to accept their replacements. Got Teeth? A Survivor’s Guide walks you through it – step by step – from "HOW did this happen to ME?" to "WHY didn’t anybody tell ME?" Her answer? "BECAUSE NOBODY TALKS ABOUT IT " I was blessed I read Got Teeth? at the very time I was awaiting surgery to remove all my natural teeth If it were not for Saundra and her keen wisdom about adapting to change, I would have gone in blind because NOBODY TALKS ABOUT IT. Armed with this knowledge and knowing which questions to ask made all thedifference in the world. I recommend this book to anyone facing dental trauma, or especially if someone you love is dealing with it. Linda S. Please visit www.gotteethguide.com

Managing Long Term Conditions: A Social Model for Community Practice

Managing Long Term Conditions: A Social Model for Community Practice

$53.52

This book explores the notion of "Managing Long Term Conditions" (MLTC) by focusing on aspects of clinical and community practice both for people requiring occasional programmes and for those with more complex needs necessitating a range of care provision. However, care provided for people living with long term conditions consists not only of that provided by health and social care professionals, but also care provided by friends and family, the voluntary sector, faith and charitable organizations and also self-care by the people who live with long term conditions. An important aspect for consideration in MLTC, therefore, lies in the context of self-help and lay care, and this book includes the concept of "patient as expert." The focus of "Managing Long Term Conditions" is on the social model of care rather than the dominant medical model as the modern healthcare system has come to recognize the value of social determinants of health in contributing to the long term health outcomes of the population. Providing coverage of each branch of healthcare–adult, children, mental health and learning disabilities–this book is essential reading for both students and practitioners in community nursing and across healthcare in general.

Stedman’s Medical Terminology provides students and instructors with a basic, mid-level text with minimal narrative content and minimal coverage of anatomy and physiology. The book alternates term presentation and student exercises to ensure that students will apply what they have learned immediately. This approach ensures student engagement, rather than mere rote learning. A robust, realistic, and relevant art program enhances the text, especially for visual learners. A full suite of ancillaries, including videos and animations, will be available for both students and instructors.
